Investigate calcium and weight loss for weight loss success

Calcium and weight loss have not produced much interest until quite recently.

Now, there has been several studies one of which was carried out at the University Laval's Faculty of Medicine.

Over a 15 week period a series of tests was carried out on a group of obese women. They were split into 2 groups. One group took 1500 mg of calcium tablets and the remainder continued on their normal diets. Those who took the calcium tablets lost nearly 6 kilograms(14 pounds) over the program period compared to 1 kilogram for the control group.

The hypothesis was, that the brain detects the lack of calcium and spurs on more food intake. Sufficient calcium seems to stifle the desire to eat more and consequently reduces the build up of surplus fat.

Consuming sufficient calcium is therefore important to ensuring the success of any weight loss program said Professor Angelo Tremblay and his team. They also showed that women whose diets were poor in calcium had more body fat, bigger waistlines and higher bad cholesterol than those who consumed moderate or large amounts of calcium.

The type of calcium could also be important because most calcium supplements are rejected and not absorbed by our bodies.
